"Larder Lake Reunion in Africa"
A Larder Lake reunion was held at the residence of Dona & Cass Atkinson in November
1990 in Tarkwa, Ghana, West Africa.
On the left is Penny Richardson (now Ghartey) at the time teaching in Ghana,
West Africa. She lived in Larder from 1940 until 1962 in the house at "the point"
with her parents Helen and Hal (Dr.) Richardson, her siblings, Pat, Peter, Jim (Jo),
and Robin. All five sibs will be in Larder for the anniversary, some of us arriving for
the weekend, others on Sunday. We will
be at our former house. Please drop by.
In the centre is Cass Atkinson employed at the time by The Ghana State Gold
Mining Corporation as Construction Manager for the Tarkwa Operations.
He lived in Larder Lake with parents Alfred & Fristina and siblings Joan,
Elaine and Dianne from 1936 to 1953 on 6th Avenue next door to the Murdock's.
On the right is Denise Jackson (maiden name Paquette.) who was living in
Ghana when we met by chance at a party. She was working as a nurse for a mining company
and her husband David doing mining exploration very near to where we lived. She is one of
8 children who grew up in Larder with her parents Fern & Aurelia Paquette. They lived on Market St in a tiny wartime
house, then moved to a much bigger home on 6th Ave. Denise moved away from
Larder to continue her studies and then moved to Sudbury.
We all plan to be in Larder for its 100th reunion.
PS: The description of Larder Lake's second school has incorrect closing data.
I went to that school when I was in grade 2 in 1940. Our teacher was Audrey Edwards.
The woodpile is significant because the school was heated by a giant wood stove
(or so it seemed to me) in the basement. Once we were
allowed to go down to make popcorn by opening the front grate.
The highlight of the year was witnessing the slaughter of a pig right across from the school during afternoon recess!

Here we are again 17 years later but this time at the 100th Larder Lake Reunion.
No palm tree and warmer clothes but happy to be together once again with all our friends from our days in Larder Lake.
